Sigma Iota Rho
The Rhodes College Theta chapter of Sigma Iota Rho, the International Studies Honor Society, promotes and rewards scholarship among undergraduate students of international studies. The Greek letter Sigma (S) stands for "synesi," meaning Prudence; Iota (I) represents "ideodoi" meaning Ideals; and Rho (R) stands for "romi," meaning Power. The founders felt these words embody important values in the field of international studies.
SIR eligibility depends on:
Declaration of an IS major or an interdisciplinary major involving international studies
Attainment of Junior or Senior Standing
Cumulative GPA of 3.4 within the major; 3.3 overall
Approval of the majority of student members.

Modus Vivendi
Read selected papers from international studies students. Modus Vivendi is the student journal of international studies at Rhodes College. Published under the auspices of Sigma Iota Rho, the staff of the journal selects from 5-7 articles each year that are submitted anonymously by students. All students are welcome to submit – selection is not limited to IS majors or students enrolled in IS classes. This has been a tradition in the department since 1995. The Rhodes Department of International Studies also publishes the journal on the internet.
“What to do with an IS Major?” Seminar
Co-sponsored by Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society and the International Studies Department, the “What to do with an IS Major?” Seminar informs students of post-graduate opportunities. They touch on careers in consulting, teaching, business, government work and graduate school. International Studies alumni, as well as, faculty talk of their own experiences. Career Services is also represented and they inform students of opportunities in the private sector and how best to utilize the Career Services office.
Spring Picnic
The IS Department also hosts an annual picnic to celebrate the successful conclusion of the school year. This is an opportunity to mingle with fellow students and professors outside of the classroom while enjoying some delicious international cuisine!
