Coming from a family of doctors and dentists, health care and public health had always been at the forefront of Amaka MgBoh’s mind. When it came time to choose a college, Rhodes was a top pick.
“I had been in Nashville my whole life, so for college I wanted something different. I was trying to look for schools that were health focused but weren't so close to home. I applied to Rhodes because it seemed like a good fit and was a small campus community where I knew I could thrive.”
Though she initially began on the pre-med track, the Health Professions Advising’s (HPA) introductory discussion panels helped MgBoh lean into her interests in public health. She’s majored in health equity through the Urban Studies Program and worked with the Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies to research how affordable housing initiatives promote generational health.
“When leaving for college I didn't know all the fields within health care that I could participate in, but I did know that I cared about it and wanted to be in that space,” said MgBoh. “One of the first HPA panel discussions I went to was Dr. Hotz's on health disparities, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of anything like that—but I knew that that’s what I wanted to do."
