Tennessee is Home

Student sitting in Memphis

We are proud to call Tennessee home, too. Rhodes College was founded in 1848 in Clarksville, Tennessee, and was originally known as the Masonic University of Tennessee. The college was moved to Memphis in 1925 and was known as Southwestern until 1984 when the college’s name was changed to Rhodes College, in honor of former president Peyton Nalle Rhodes. Since 1984, Rhodes has grown from a regionally recognized institution to a nationally ranked liberal arts and sciences college. Our roots in Tennessee run deep, and our traditions are strong. Fun fact: the former campus in Clarksville is now home to Austin Peay State University.
