Planning a Degree
If you are interested in majoring in Mathematics or Computer Science, you are encouraged to speak with a faculty member about your plans. The College does not require that you declare a major until Spring of your second year, but you can always declare earlier.
Mathematics
To pursue a Mathematics major, you are encouraged to complete the Calculus sequence (Math 121, 122 and 223) as soon as possible. If you enter Rhodes with credit for Math 121 or even 122 then you will be off to a good start. Math 201 is required of most upper-level courses so it should be completed in the Spring of the first year (if you are prepared) or no later than your second year. In addition, Math 261 should be taken no later than Spring of your second year. The Physics sequence and CS 141 should be completed no later than the third year but the sooner the better.

Keep in mind the following scheduling restrictions:
| Math 121 | Only offered in the Fall |
| Math 201 | Only offered in the Spring; requires Math 122; 201 is required for most upper level courses |
| Math 261 | Only offered in the Spring (does not require Math 201) |
| CS 141 | Only offered in the Fall |
| Math 321 | Only offered in the Fall of even years |
| Math 362 | Only offered in the Fall of odd years |
Computer Science
To pursue the Computer Science major, it is important that you take the introductory courses (CS 141, 142, 172, 231 and 241) as soon as possible. Starting the major in the second year will be difficult; starting in the third year may be impossible. In particular, CS 241 is a prerequisite for almost all upper-level courses so it should not be put off. The mathematics courses should be completed no later than the third year. At least one upper-level (above 300) computer science course will be offered each semester but you should plan ahead if there are particular courses that you want to take.
