Rhodes Early Career Award in Environmental Sciences & Studies
Rhodes College believes that learning is a life-long pursuit. In support of this ideal, the Environmental Program at Rhodes has established the Rhodes Early Career Award in Environmental Studies & Sciences to assist graduating seniors who majored or minored in Environmental Studies or Environmental Science as they pursue early career opportunities or post-graduate study.
The Award will provide one $1000.00 award annually to support the student’s initial post-graduate endeavors in work or post-graduate study and reinforce the Environmental Studies & Sciences program’s interest in the continued development of our Environmental Studies and Environmental Science majors and minors.
Rhodes faculty may nominate graduating seniors who have completed or will complete the requirements for a major or minor in Environmental Studies or Environmental Science.
Nominations must include:
- a letter of nomination from a Rhodes faculty member that explicitly identifies the student’s participation in the Environmental Program at Rhodes and dedication to environmental issues;
- a letter from the student describing in detail his or her intended post-graduate work or study and a statement of how he or she will put to use the ideas learned as an Environmental Studies or Science minor at Rhodes. The student must also provide his or her GPA as of the end of the senior fall semester.
To qualify for the award, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the end of the fall semester of their senior year and have been engaged in research, a creative activity, or an outreach/community enrichment program that clearly addresses environmental issues broadly defined to include (but not limited to): environmental law, environmental justice, environmental economics, environmental policy formulation, environmental impact assessment, environmental education, environmental engineering, environmental arts, and environmental science.
Nominations should be submitted electronically to the director of the Environmental Studies & Sciences program. Nominations will be reviewed by faculty in the Environmental Studies & Science program and the award may be announced at the annual Awards Convocation.
