Ann Viano joined the physics department in 1999, after a two-year post-doctoral appointment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where she worked to improve magnetic resonance imaging for children with artificial implants. She is an active collaborator with many researchers and students in the Memphis scientific community, particularly in biomedical engineering. She is currently involved in the use of ultrasound to study biological materials and is part of the Physics Laboratory for Ultrasonic Studies at Rhodes. She also manages and maintains the college’s observatory and serves as the club advisor for the Aerospace Engineering Club and the Women in STEM club.
Ann is also a past president of Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society, and works to promote an interest and dedication to physics at all levels. She has served on the American Institute of Physics advisory committee on physics education and the SPS/Sigma Pi Sigma national council.
