Brent Hoffmeister joined Rhodes in 1996 and served as Physics Department Chair from 2006 - 2023. He is the faculty advisor of Rhodes’ award-winning chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS). In 2011, he received national recognition as an Outstanding SPS Chapter Advisor. He also is a faculty supervisor for the Rhodes CubeSat team that is working with NASA and the University of Oklahoma to develop a satellite to test novel photovoltaic cells in low earth orbit. Dr. Hoffmeister has taught several different physics courses at Rhodes, with topics ranging from the physics of music to advanced electromagnetic theory. Dr. Hoffmeister is the Director of the Physics Laboratory for Ultrasonic Studies (PLUS) at Rhodes, where he collaborates with Dr. Ann Viano to develop ultrasonic techniques to diagnose osteoporosis. In 2021, he was named a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America for “contributions to the understanding of ultrasound characterization of bone.”
