Declaring a Major in Anthropology and Sociology

an anthropology classroom with students

1. To declare a major in ANSO, your first step is to ask a professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology to be your major advisor. Almost any faculty member in the department can take on new advisees each year. If there is a professor with whom you have a good relationship and who knows you and your work, then attend the professor’s office hours or set up a meeting to discuss your request. If you’re not sure who to ask, feel free to ask the chair of the department for suggestions.

2. Fill out the Declaration of Major form and Degree Requirements Worksheet.

3. Write a brief Major Essay that addresses the following questions:

  • What brought you to major in anthropology and sociology?
  • How does a major in anthropology and sociology support your career and/or life goals?

Your essay should be around one double-spaced page in length.

4. Ask your ANSO advisor to review your Declaration of Major form, Degree Requirements Worksheet, and Major Essay. If they approve your materials, they will sign your Declaration of Major form. Then ask your previous advisor to sign the form.

5. Submit the Major Declaration Form and Major Essay to the Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. After signing the form, the chair will email a copy to the registrar (express@rhodes.edu) and CC you.
